1. Breathe Fresh Morning Air (Shanhai zhaozhen)

[Preparation]

Stand with the legs slightly bent and feet held about shoulders' width apart; place the right hand over the navel (or over the dantian, which is about 2 inches lower), and then place the left hand over the right; hold the hands there with the palms facing in (Fig. 84).

[Movement]

1. Take a deep breath, first filling the lower abdomen and then gradually filling the whole chest.

2. Then gradually exhale the breath completely. When you naturally have to take another breath, gradually take an abdominal breath, feeling the air enter the lower abdomen, This is what is called in Chinese medicine "sinking the Qi." While doing this, you should relax the whole body, stand perfectly straight (without bending the knees), close your eyes gently, touch the tip of your tongue to the ridge above the upper front teeth, and gently contract the anal sphincter. Concentrate upon the gathering of Qi, and imagine that the Qi is purifying your body as the fresh air moves in and out. Repeat 3-5 times.
